2 Samuel 6:7 states that the Lord's anger was directed against Uzzah, that God struck him for his error, and that Uzzah died by the ark of God.

“And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his error; and there he died by the ark of God.” (KJV)

2 Samuel 6:7 Meaning

The phrase “the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah” explicitly indicates that God was displeased with Uzzah's actions. This anger is directly connected to Uzzah's subsequent fate, as the verse continues, “God smote him there for his error.” While the verse affirms that Uzzah's death was a result of God's action, it does not provide a detailed explanation of what Uzzah's error was. It is important to note that the verse states, “there he died by the ark of God,” highlighting the significance of the location of his death in relation to the ark.

The preceding verse, 2 Samuel 6:6, reports that Uzzah put forth his hand to the ark when the oxen shook it. This action is related to the events in verse 7, but it does not fully define Uzzah's error or provide insight into his motives. The context indicates that Uzzah's action was in response to a specific situation, yet the nature of that error remains unspecified in the text.

Context of 2 Samuel 6:7

In the surrounding context, 2 Samuel 6:5 describes the joyful atmosphere as David and the house of Israel played music before the Lord. However, this celebration is abruptly contrasted with the serious consequence of Uzzah's action. The previous verse explains that Uzzah put forth his hand and took hold of the ark when the oxen shook it, but it does not state why this occurred or assign motives to Uzzah. The following verses illustrate David's reaction, where he expresses displeasure and fear, but these emotions are not part of the explanation provided in verse 7 itself.
